In the north west of Punjab, Pakistan is a district recognized as Attock District. It is in the midst of Pindigheb, Attock tehsil and Fatehjang from Rawalpindi District of the Punjab province of British India, the city was formed in April 1904 by the amalgamation of Talagang in the Jhelum District.
In 1581, Attock Fort complex was built by the grandson of Baber, Akbar the Great after recognizing the tactical importance of that area. Hindu Maratha state and Durrani Afghans to the west and Sikhs in Punjab were at the peak when in 18th century when Mughal Empire was descending down. Attock became a combat zone among two opposing powers and in 1758 Raghunathrao brother of Maratha Peshwa’s won Attock and flagged the authorities of Hindus. Panipat Marathas lost to Ahmed Shah Abdali in the third war and had no more in charge of the region. In conclusion to an argument both Sikhs and Afghans were subjugated by British in 19th century.
Attock old Name:
The name Attock was changed to Campbellpur when Briton Sir Coli Campbell founded the city and then soon in 1978 the name of the district was again changed to Attock. It is also the head quarter of Attock district. The western boundary of the district was covered by River Indus. According to the survey examined in 1998 in Pakistan the spoken languages of the district includes Punjabi which is 90% spoken in the district where as other are only 10% spoken. Even a great variety of Punjabi dialects are spoken by the populace of the Attock district which includes Pothohri, Chhachi, Jandali, Majhi and Ghebi.
In KPK (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) province border areas and in the cities Pashto is mainly spoken by the population and as Urdu being the national language and also the mother tongue of few people is spoken and understood by many people and the educated people of the district not only understood but also speaks English.
The district population estimated in 1998 was about 1,274,935 from which 20.45 was the population of urban which was exceeded to 1.58 million in 2008 according to a survey held in Pakistan. In 1930 Gazetteer of the Attock district claims that 8.5% population was of Hindus. The main casts of the Attock district includes Awan, Arians, Gakhars, Gujjars, Jat, Mughals, Pathans, Shaikhs, Syed, Parcha, Qanungoh, Qureshis and Rajputs.
